I know I’m new here and all, but I thought sharing some of our role playing experiences thus far would be a nice way to interact with others.
I don’t claim to be a grand role player, totally the opposite, I need a lot of work. I like hearing comments and critiques from others, especially to point out mistakes since it’s hard for me to see them. That way I can focus on those and work on them.
One of the first things I did once I really got into role playing (which was back in my Gaia Online days) was look up tips as well as guides to improve my role playing skills.
These are a number of well thought out guides I found, especially for beginners. They sure have helped me so far.

Role Playing Tips
One thing I know is hard for me to do is create a character that doesn’t have the same qualities I have, ‘cause who knows you better than yourself, right? This of course makes it easier for me to act out, but is it really fun?
I’ve found it difficult to be descriptive on my posts. I’m usually a person of little words; so coming up with what to say is hard. I’ve learned that the best way of coming up with these would be to close my eyes and imagine myself in my character’s shoes. What is he/she hearing, smelling, tasting, looking and so on. Music seems to help as well.
However, this is even worse for me if I have a limited time to write posts. I need time to get in character and make the post as entertaining as possible. Which is why I prefer forum rp’s to anything else. With forum rp’s the posts stay there, meaning I can take my time to respond and make the post enjoyable for others and me.
Jumping in and interacting with other characters for the first time is another doozie for me. It’s even worse when I make loner type characters without really thinking of how harder it’ll be for me to interact with others.
I’ve also learned that role playing is a big community thing. It’s a lot like writing a big book that has numerous amounts of authors. When you read a book you expect it to have continuity and flow. You wouldn’t want to read one page in first person and then suddenly have the next page in third. There has to be a link between posts to make the whole role play appealing to continue and others to join.
Let’s move on to the conversation starters:

Let’s move on to the conversation starters:
- Why do you role play?
- When and where did you first role play?
- There are different types of role playing out there, which are your favorite and why?
- What are the things you think you should work on?
- What are the things you've noticed you've avoided to role play and why? (Regarding character types, genders and story genres)
- What character traits do you see in common with the characters you've played as?
- For those who read some of the guides, or just through trial and error, what have you learned and what do you believe you should be focusing on for improving?
