However, there are some occupations that are specific to certain areas in the game. There are also many jobs where your character can level up and gain more power through the game. So long as you are active, your character will be able to succeed.
COMMON OCCUPATIONS, Common occupations are occupations that are very similar to the sort of jobs we see today. This group includes but is not limited to: service-industry jobs, corporate jobs, the media, construction, entrepreneurs, medical and pharmaceutical jobs, and farming.
The following occupations are suggestions and are in no way what you are limited to. Your character can be just about anything you desire so long as it fits the context of the game.
|
THE DOWN BELOW OCCUPATIONS, GANG BANGER: In Khthonia, if you want to live and make a buck, the surest way is to join the oppressors. The crime organizations rule Khthonia with tight fists and big grins. Because of the heavy taxes imposed by the gangs, members are treated as both the law enforcement and the criminals by the people they oppress. The three gangs that rule Khthonia are The Scarlet Guns in Hogwash, The Black Collars in the Junkyard Downs, and The Ravage Family in Ravageland. There is more on the gangs and their ranks in the next post. RACERS: The pride and joy of The Down Below, the racers are the closest things to celebrities and athletes that Khthonia and Elysia have. Due to hovercraft racing’s immense popularity, it isn’t hard to imagine that the racers themselves are always in the limelight. The racers follow a class system that ranks them by skill and wins. The highest class, The Hero Class, move up to race in Elysia for the nobles. Racers who rise to Class B can gain sponsors that will help them with racing and training expenses. There is more on racers below. MECHANICS: Behind every great racer, there is a mechanic greasing the wheels. Working side-by-side with the racers, mechanics are the real hands behind the magic of hovercraft racing. A racer and a mechanic usually pair up as a team but the mechanics are not paid any attention to in the media. PARTS DEALERS: Parts dealers are a racer’s and a mechanic’s line to good parts for a decent price. Unlike a mechanic, a parts dealer is not a part of a team. But, rather, tends to service several different racers at a time. They tend to employ junkies to go out and search for the parts that racers ordered. Parts dealers don’t deal with just racers and mechanics; they also deal with anyone who owns machina, aerials, and airships that are in need of parts and repairs. JUNKIES: People who scavenge in garbage and debris for parts to recycle. This is considered a dirty and highly dangerous job, although it is a necessary one. A majority of Khthonian civilization depends on finding recyclable material. However, many people – especially from The Upside – treat Junkies like lepers. There is an unwarranted prejudice that they are disease-ridden and uneducated. FACTORY WORKERS: For the corporate overlords who live high in Elysia, the people of Khthonia provide a form of cheap labor. A majority of Khthonians will have worked in a factory at least once in their life time. The health conditions of the factories tend to be horrid and the treatment of workers is just as poor. THE UPSIDE OCCUPATIONS, NOBLES: The nobles are the politicians and the corporation owners of Elysia. Aside from ensuring that their best interests are being taken care of, a noble’s job is to provide the king with the various viewpoints of the people. They are also to keep the king’s power in check, while wallowing in his good graces. It is both a stereotype and a truth that many nobles are twisted and corrupt, but there are also plenty of benevolent nobles who do a lot of charity work in Khthonia and the less advanced of the colonized islands. Each noble has a different title, and each title denotes a duty that the noble must accomplish if they want to earn the next title. Nobles are the only group in THE BLUE that can become royalty and rule Elysia. There is more on nobles and their titles below. H.A.W.K.s: The H.A.W.K.s is the law enforcement and aerial fleet of Elysia. They obey the orders of the king and high-ranking nobles, and protect all of Elysia from the sky pirates. Not all H.A.W.K.s work in airships; many of them work on the islands as the police force, protecting the people and keeping order. The H.A.W.K.s also follow a ranking system that is further explained below. TUTORS & GOVERNESSES: There is no such thing as school for the children of Elysia. Nobles pay private tutors and governesses a respectable amount of money to teach their children history, science, literature, math, and whatever else they feel is vital for their child’s education. Tutors, or teachers, are typically male and live on their own. Governesses are always female and live either in the noble’s house or on the estate. They also act as the child’s caretaker. There are some rare cases of governors but typically a noble prefers a woman’s touch. PROFESSORS: The professors are the educators at Uisdean University. Professors were all formerly tutors, governesses, or scholars themselves before they earned their rank as a professor. Most professors conduct research funded by the nobles of Elysia, and teach classes to knowledge-hungry scholars who attend the university. They wield a surprising amount of respectability in their society due to their wisdom. The majority of professors are male, and many women feel the pains of being part of the patriarchal system at the University and wish to change it. SCHOLARS: The scholars are students of Uisdean University and the dogs of the professors. They are an insatiably curious group who want to uncover the mysteries of the world. They allow themselves to be ordered around by their professors in order to curry favor. That way, they can make connections that will help them fund their research. It is expected of scholars to travel to both Elysia and Khthonia in order to complete their education. Scholars usually join the university at the age of fifteen to sixteen and do not graduate until their early to mid twenties. Depending on what a scholar wants to study, they will be assigned under a professor and that professor will mentor the scholar until that scholar completes that specific professor's course work. Once a graduate, a scholar has the option to stay on with the University or pursue a career in their field of study. SERVANTS: Nobles would be nothing without people to order around. The servants are the backbones of Elysia. Most of them are former residents of Khthonia who were able to find their ticket out of that hell hole but didn’t have much money after buying their way into Elysia. A servant usually lives in their master’s house or on the estate. PETS: This is a special occupation – if it can even be called that – for Chimeras. Since many Chimeras become more animal-like after undergoing anima splicing, some nobles keep them around as entertainment. They are treated as any pet would be: they are doted on and adored, but they can also be mistreated. A pet is nothing more than a glorified servant. THE FLOATERS,SKY PIRATE: The sky pirates are the scourge of the sky. They refuse to follow the laws of the Elysian king and live freely. Of course, in order to remain self-sufficient, they need to raid the islands and other ships for supplies. They usually stay away from Khthonia in fear of being grounded there by the crime organizations. There is more on sky pirates and their ranks below. THE ALCHEMISTS: The alchemists are said to be scholars and professors ‘who went bad’. They are also knowledge-seekers. But, unlike their noble shoe-shining counterparts, they are willing to fund themselves. Known to be ruthless in their quest for knowledge, alchemists search both Elysia and Khthonia to discover the answers of the world. They believe that aether is the key to finding out how to create the ever-elusive philosopher’s stone. Alchemists are also the only people who know the art of synthesis, or the combining of two or more raw materials and using the elements in those materials to create something new. The process almost seems magical, as it happens nearly instantly. BOUNTY HUNTERS: The bounty hunters are an honorable group of nomads who live by their own rules. They don’t pledge their loyalty to any ruling party, but rather spend their days hunting down targets for money and living on the edge. While many people consider them ‘the good guys’ compared to mercenaries and sky pirates, they are a far cry from being heroes. They will hunt down anyone, so long as they have a price on their head. MERCENARIES: Mercenaries are very similar to bounty hunters, only they aren’t considered heroes. Quite the opposite, actually: mercenaries are greatly looked down on in society due to their willingness to take about any job for the right price. They are the ‘middlemen’ when nobles and H.A.W.K.s don’t want to get their hands dirty, or when one of the crime organizations wants one of the rival’s members to disappear without being blamed. They will kidnap, murder, torture, and otherwise wreak havoc for the sake of money. Like sky pirates and gang members, mercenaries tend to have bounties on their heads. HUNTSMEN/HUNTRESSES: Due to the severity of climate and environmental changes, Khthonia and Elysia are overrun with mutated monsters that need to be killed. Huntsmen and huntresses travel the world in order to find these monsters. After they kill their target, they make a profit off the body. They are typically viewed as heroes because they get rid of beasts that are very dangerous. [/blockquote]

While the crime organizations are very different from each other, they all follow the same essential hierarchy. You can buy titles from The Karma Shop.
THE BOSS: As the leader, they command respect and hold authority over everyone in their gang. Although usually revered by their gang, many of the members may also be aiming to take their boss down and assume power for themselves.
THE RIGHT-HAND: The right-hand is the boss’s most trusted associate in the gang. They are second only to the boss and hold the highest authority amongst the regular gang members. The right-hand is also the connection between the captains and the boss’s orders. Should anything happen to the boss, the right-hand will take their place as the gang’s leader.
CAPTAINS: A captain is the leader of a group of soldiers. They are given their orders by the right-hand, or even by the boss directly. They are responsible for all the soldiers underneath their command and they must take responsibility if a mission doesn’t go exactly as planned.
SOLDIERS: The soldiers are the backbone of a gang. They’re the ones who make sure the taxes are being paid on time, they take of the people that need taking care of, and they are the most feared by the people--they are the ones who are terrorizing the public. In a group of soldiers, people always have a particular job, such as being the negotiator or the muscle. A soldier is the highest rank in the gangs that you can join off the bat.
FRESHBLOOD: Freshbloods are the rookies of the gang. Wet behind the ears and usually innocent, they are usually made to carry out missions that will help them become numb to the cruelties that they may have to carry out during their career as a gang banger.
MOLE: The mole is a special position within a gang. They are a double-agent, so-to-speak. Their job is to infiltrate another gang and to deliver information to their true gang. Moles are usually people that the boss and the right-hand have a lot of faith in, as a mole can turn on them at any time if they are discovered. You cannot join as a mole. You must be made a mole in the game through a special NPC event, a plot with a right-hand character, or a plot with a gang boss character.
ABOUT THE GANGS, The gangs that are most similar to the mafia are The Scarlet Guns and The Black Collars. Out of all three major gangs, The Scarlet Guns are considered the more honorable out of the groups. They follow a strict code that disallows them from needlessly killing anyone or pushing their weight around if they don’t have to. Freshbloods mark their initiation as soldiers by painting their guns red. The leader of The Scarlet Guns, Scarlet Montague, is the sister of the pirate queen Jade Montague. While the sisters have a strange relationship, Scarlet and Jade help each other out with any needed supplies and muscle. The Scarlet Guns do not allow women in their ranks.
The Black Collars, unlike their Hogwash counterparts, are willing to do whatever it takes to squeeze money out of the people of Junkyard Downs. They are known as a greedy, ruthless bunch, and many civilians try their best to ignore them. They act as if they are entitled to special privileges and use their power to their advantage. Ezra Powers, the boss of The Black Collars, is the lover of Scarlet Montague. Their romantic union is the reason behind a peace treaty between the Guns and the Collars, which allows them to share muscle and artillery.
The final gang, The Ravage Family, is said to be more of a cult then an actual gang. Run by a very charismatic and crazy old man, the Family is known as the most ruthless and bloodthirsty of the gangs. They work the people of Ravageland to the bone and help their boss – who they call father – drag his new brides to the altar. Members of similar age groups refer to each other as brothers and sisters, and refer to anyone much older than themselves as uncles and aunts. The exceptions to this are the many wives of the boss, whom the gang members must refer to as mother or mama no matter their age. Many of the members actually despise the boss, but they work for him. Because, in Ravageland, Family members can evade many of the horrors that come with living in the pits because of their pledged loyalty to Wilks Ravage. If you join a member of the Family, remember that their last name must be Ravage when you edit the display name.

The higher the class, the more famous and favored that racer is. The youngest a racer can debut is fourteen. Racers gain classes by winning a certain number of races.
CLASS D: Class D racers are the rookies. When a Class D racer debuts, they are given a lot of publicity at first. But their spotlight will fade if they don’t show much promise on the track. They can only use hovercrafts provided by the track.
CLASS C: Class C racers are the forgotten Class. They may have made it past the rookie stage, but they are still nowhere near the big leagues. Unless a racer in Class C shows a lot of talent, most Class C racers are ignored. Like in Class D, they can only use hovercrafts provided by the track.
CLASS B: Class B racers are the lowest level of the big leagues. This is the class that could either break or make a racer’s entire career. Racers in Class B may take on a noble to sponsor them. Racers who are sponsored will have to wear uniforms provided by the noble that represents the noble’s family. The racers can also purchase their own hovercrafts and modify them to their needs.
CLASS A: Class A are the big leaguers, as they are one class away from making the highest class, Class S. Everyone knows who these racers are and they are highly admired.
CLASS S: Class S, otherwise known as The Hero Class, are the legends of the race track. Class S racers with a noble sponsor are granted Elysian citizenship, along with their family. They then race in Elysia for the entertainment of the nobles.

Though the king may make the decrees and is the one who is admired among the people, it is the nobles and their counsel that keep the king in check. The nobles are ranked by titles, and each title denotes specific social duties. A character can either earn a title or you can marry into a title. You can buy titles from The Karma Shop.
DUKE & DUCHESS: Dukes and Duchesses are the closest to the King and among all the nobles, and they are the most highly revered. They serve as the King’s advisors and meet with H.A.W.K Generals to discuss the defenses of Elysia and how to eradicate the sky pirates. Only a Duke/Dutchess can succeed the King when there is no Queen or blood heir.
MAQUIS & MARQUESS: Marquises and Marquess’s are the judges and jury in the Elysian court system. They make up a committee of judges that are present at every trial. They also have the power to acquit criminals.
COUNT & COUNTESS: The Counts and Countesses are the celebrities among the nobles since they are always in the public eye. They are the spokespeople for the King, the H.A.W.Ks, other nobles, and corporations. They are also in charge of propaganda and any information that is made public.
BARON & BARONESS: Barons and Baronesses are the paper pushers of all the nobles. They are tasked with looking over paperwork, such as deeds and new laws to make sure that everything is in order. Nothing is given to the King until a Baron or Baroness approves of it first.
LORD & LADY: A person of noble blood who has not been granted a title by the King. The children of titled nobles are considered lords and ladies.

A H.A.W.K starts out as a groundling and works their way up the ranks through their years of service. However, a H.A.W.K can always choose to stay in a certain position, if that’s the rank that they prefer. You can buy titles from The Karma Shop.
GENERALS: The Generals are the strategists and commanders of the H.A.W.Ks. They are rarely on the battlefield; rather, they stay at Holmger and give orders from a safe distance. Among the H.A.W.K.s, they hold the highest authority. They meet personally with the King, the Dukes, and the Duchesses to discuss matters of war and defense.
LIEUTENANTS: Lieutenants are second to Generals, and they hold the greatest amount of authority next to them. They are in charge of delivering the orders of the Generals to the Captains. It is also a Lieutenant’s job to oversee battles and record them.
CAPTAINS: Captains are the leaders of an airmen crew. They are the commanders of the ships and deliver orders from the higher-ups. It is their job to see the Generals’ strategies through and make them a reality.
AIRMEN: Airmen are the soldiers and crew of a H.A.W.K ship. Within a crew, an airman can have many different duties such as being the cook, an engineer, a grappler, or a mechanics. It all depends on what they are qualified for.
GROUNDLINGS: Groundlings, also known simply as Knights, are the foot soldiers of the H.A.W.K.s. They remain posted on the islands of Elysia and act as the police force.

A pirate crew is treated as part-business and part-family, and a pirate ship is the house. Within the crew, there is a chain-of-command that must be followed. You can buy titles from The Karma Shop.
CAPTAIN: The Captain is the leader of the crew; their word is law on their ship. It is the duty of a Captain to pay tribute to The Pirate Queen.
QUARTERMASTER: The Quartermaster, also known as the First Mate, is the second-in-command. Their job is to reinforce the law of the Captain, help keep order on the ship, divide rations and supplies, and oversee the work of the other crew members. They are also the main navigator for the ship.
SHIP'S NAVIGATOR: The Ship's Navigator has the daunting task of guiding a ship through the vast expanse of The Blue, taking into account wind velocity, aether levels, compass direction, and the level balance of the ship. The Ship's Navigator also has a commanding knowledge of the night sky, the easiest means by which to choose a heading.
MASTER GUNNER: The Master Gunner is in charge of the artillery during battles and ensures that the Captain’s plan of attack is followed.
SHIP DOCTOR: Being the doctor on board a pirate ship is one of the more confusing positions in a crew. Ship doctors are usually doctors from H.A.W.K ships that have been taken prisoner and are now forced to heal injured crew members. Sometimes doctors were civilians that have been taken prisoner, and rarely a doctor is someone that has come onto a ship by their own free will.
MONKEY MEN & WOMEN: Otherwise known as the crew members, they are the backbone of any ship. They do all the dirty work in the crew, but no ship can sail without them.
FLEDGLING: Fledglings are the younger and newest crew members. They do all of the menial chores, such as shopping for supplies, cleaning the ship, and keeping watch in the Crow’s Nest.
