TIMELINE: ZERO TO FOURTEEN YEARS OLD
The birth of Dietrich Andreas Braach was nothing short of an excruciating experience for his parents, more so for the mother who had cursed and yelled so loudly that it was a wonder her husband had not turned deaf. It was a long and difficult labour, as if Dietrich stubbornly refused to be born into this forsaken world, as if he understood the perils of being a helpless infant in the cruel place they called ‘home’. Yet the babe was eventually surrounded by loving arms of his mutant parents who resembled gazelles soaring through skies with their tall statures, strikingly fast legs and flexible bodies.
Ever the headstrong and inquisitive child, Dietrich formed strong opinions when he was just a child, probing and asking so many questions that others felt irritated by his mere presence. His girlish looks were made fun of and many men tried to coax him into less respectable errands just to have a taste of that wide-eyed boy with hair that reached his ankles. Rapunzel, Rapunzel! The boys cried out teasingly while pulling those lovely locks and laughing when his eyes watered from shame and anger. He only wished to be pretty, to be like those beautiful ladies who strutted gracefully in those strange bright shops with too many things that he never had the chance to touch. He was an obstinate one, sticking to his odd ways of dressing in his mother’s old dresses and walking about coyly like a peacock showing off its precious feathers.
He craved for riches and more, to enjoy a life of fine garments and warm food cooked by chefs who would hanker after his praises after a particularly well-cooked dish. Greed, his father stated simply, was the downfall of all beings. Undeterred by the old man, Dietrich pursued the finer side of the wretched lives they were leading, learning to blend in with the nobles who had once turned away from his strangeness.
Oh what beautiful hair you have! He smiles winningly and dances like a faithful marionette to their expectations. Oh what a slender waist you have! He laughs merrily, tilting his head back obediently to allow the gentlemen and ladies show their admiration towards his smooth skin. Oh what a sinful mouth you have! He gives a playful wink and twirls his hair in theatrical shyness. Oh what nimble fingers you have! He stops the massage mid-way to reward them with an affectionate kiss, silently pocketing the trinkets he had found in their houses. Oh what strong legs you have! He embraces them to whisper soft words of admiration, even thanking them as he walks away.
He never looked back. And neither did they, or they would see that his clothes hid the numerous treasures spirited away from their houses. It was only much, much later that they realised their folly, but the thief had already disappeared into another person’s embrace.
There was nothing he could not do, yet the youth was bored by such a life. He craved something that rewarded much, much more. The moment he witnessed a group of riff-raffs chased by another loud boisterous group before hurling themselves onto a ship, Dietrich fell in love.
The skies would give him freedom and wealth.
